Reproductive Carrier Screening is a DNA test in Malaysia designed for couples who are planning pregnancy or want to understand whether they may carry inherited genetic changes that could be passed on to their children. Some individuals may be healthy carriers without showing symptoms, but if both partners carry changes in the same gene, there may be a higher chance of having a child affected by an inherited condition.

This screening can help detect carrier risks for inherited conditions such as thalassemia, spinal muscular atrophy, Fragile X syndrome, and other genetic disorders. At Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, the package includes analysis of more than 400 genes related to autosomal recessive and X-linked recessive conditions, together with pre-test and post-test genetic counselling.

Why Consider Reproductive Carrier Screening?

Many inherited conditions can be passed down silently through families. A person may carry a genetic change without having symptoms or knowing they are a carrier. Reproductive Carrier Screening helps couples understand whether they may have shared carrier risks that could affect their future children.

This information can support more informed family planning, early medical guidance, and timely intervention when needed. For couples planning pregnancy, carrier screening can provide clarity before conception and help guide discussions with doctors and genetic counsellors.

Who May Benefit from Reproductive Carrier Screening?

You may consider this screening if you:

  • Are planning pregnancy
  • Want to understand inherited genetic risks before starting a family
  • Have a family history of inherited conditions
  • Want to know whether you or your partner may be a carrier
  • Are concerned about conditions such as thalassemia, spinal muscular atrophy, or Fragile X syndrome
  • Want genetic counselling to support reproductive planning
  • Prefer to make informed decisions before pregnancy

Why Genetic Counselling Matters

Genetic counselling is an important part of reproductive carrier screening. A genetic counsellor helps explain what the test can and cannot tell you, reviews your personal and family history, and guides you through possible results. After testing, counselling helps couples understand the results and discuss suitable next steps with their healthcare team.

What is Reproductive Carrier Screening?
Reproductive Carrier Screening is a DNA test that checks whether a person carries inherited genetic changes that may be passed on to their children. It is especially useful for couples who are planning pregnancy.

Who should consider Reproductive Carrier Screening?
This screening may be suitable for couples planning pregnancy, individuals with a family history of inherited conditions, or those who want to understand possible genetic risks before starting a family.

Can healthy people be genetic carriers?
Yes. Many carriers are healthy and may not show any symptoms. A carrier may only become aware of the risk through genetic testing, especially when both partners carry changes linked to the same inherited condition.

What conditions can carrier screening help assess?
Carrier screening may help assess inherited conditions such as thalassemia, spinal muscular atrophy, Fragile X syndrome, and other autosomal recessive or X-linked recessive conditions.

What is included in this package?
The package includes analysis of more than 400 genes related to autosomal recessive and X-linked recessive conditions, as well as pre-test and post-test genetic counselling.

Why is carrier screening useful before pregnancy?
Carrier screening before pregnancy can help couples understand inherited risks earlier, consider available options, and plan their family with better information and professional guidance.

Does a positive carrier result mean my child will definitely have a condition?
Not necessarily. A positive result means you carry a genetic change. The risk to a child depends on factors such as whether your partner also carries a related genetic change and the inheritance pattern of the condition.
