Hereditary Cancer Genetic Testing Package is designed for individuals and families who want to better understand whether cancer risk may run in the family. This genetic test looks for inherited gene changes that may increase the risk of certain cancers, such as breast, ovarian, colorectal, prostate, and other hereditary cancers.
This package does not diagnose cancer. Instead, it helps identify whether a person may have an inherited cancer risk, so doctors can recommend suitable next steps such as earlier screening, more frequent monitoring, preventive strategies, or family risk assessment. Genetic counselling is an important part of the process to help patients understand what the test can and cannot tell them.
Available at Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, this package is suitable for international patients who have a family history of cancer, cancer diagnosed at a young age in the family, multiple relatives with related cancers, or concerns about inherited cancer risk.
Why Consider Hereditary Cancer Genetic Testing?
Cancer can happen for many reasons, but some cancers are linked to inherited genetic changes passed down through families. Hereditary Cancer Genetic Testing can help patients move from uncertainty to informed action by identifying whether they may have an increased genetic risk.
For individuals with a family history of cancer, this information may help doctors recommend a more personalised screening and prevention plan. It may also provide helpful information for family members who may share similar inherited risks.
Signs That Cancer Risk May Run in the Family
You may consider speaking to a genomic medicine team if:
- Several family members have had the same or related cancers
- Cancer was diagnosed at a young age
- A family member has had more than one type of cancer
- Rare cancers have occurred in the family
- You are concerned about inherited cancer risk
Why Genetic Counselling Matters
Genetic testing should not be interpreted alone. Genetic counselling helps patients understand the purpose of testing, the possible results, and what the findings may mean for future healthcare decisions. After testing, the counsellor and healthcare team can help patients plan suitable next steps based on their results, medical history, and family background.
What is Hereditary Cancer Genetic Testing?
Hereditary Cancer Genetic Testing is a genetic test that looks for inherited gene changes that may increase the risk of certain cancers. These may include breast, ovarian, colorectal, prostate, and other hereditary cancers.
Does this test diagnose cancer?
No. This test does not diagnose cancer. It helps identify whether you may have an inherited risk of developing certain cancers, so your doctor can guide you on screening, prevention, or follow-up steps.
Who should consider Hereditary Cancer Genetic Testing?
You may consider this test if several family members have had the same or related cancers, if cancer was diagnosed at a young age, if someone in the family had more than one type of cancer, or if rare cancers have occurred in the family.
If I have a cancer-related gene mutation, will I definitely get cancer?
No. Having a genetic mutation means your cancer risk may be higher, but it does not mean you will definitely develop cancer. Your result should be interpreted together with your personal health, lifestyle, and family history.
Why is genetic counselling important?
Genetic counselling helps you understand whether testing is appropriate, what the results may mean, and how the information may affect you and your family. A genetic counsellor can guide you before and after the test.
Can this test help my family members?
Yes. Genetic test results may provide useful information for family members who may share similar inherited risks. Your healthcare team can advise whether family members should consider counselling or testing.
