Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) is a non-surgical, minimally invasive weight loss procedure in Malaysia for individuals who want to manage obesity without external incisions. Performed endoscopically, ESG reduces stomach volume using internal sutures, helping patients feel full earlier and for a longer period of time.
By reducing stomach capacity, ESG can support patients in eating less naturally and achieving sustainable weight loss when combined with lifestyle, nutrition, and medical guidance. On average, patients may lose up to 17% of their total body weight within the first year after the procedure, depending on individual condition, adherence to lifestyle changes, and medical follow-up.
At Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, ESG is delivered through a multidisciplinary weight management programme led by Dr Yong Karl King, Consultant in Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Endoscopic Bariatrics. Patients receive support from a team that may include dietitians, endocrinologists, and clinical psychologists to help improve long-term weight management outcomes.
Why Consider Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty?
Obesity is a long-term health condition that can increase the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, fatty liver disease, heart disease, sleep apnoea, joint problems, and other health concerns. For some patients, diet and exercise alone may not be enough to achieve meaningful and sustainable weight loss.
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty offers a non-surgical option for selected patients who want a minimally invasive approach to weight management. Because the procedure is performed endoscopically without external incisions, it may offer a shorter recovery experience compared with traditional bariatric surgery. However, ESG is not a quick fix. Long-term success depends on medical follow-up, healthy eating, behavioural changes, and patient commitment.
Who May Consider ESG?
You may consider speaking to a bariatric endoscopy specialist about ESG if you:
- Struggle with obesity or excess weight
- Want a non-surgical weight loss procedure
- Have not achieved sustainable weight loss through lifestyle changes alone
- Prefer a minimally invasive approach without external incisions
- Are willing to commit to long-term diet, lifestyle, and follow-up care
- Have obesity-related health risks such as diabetes, fatty liver, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure
What is Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)?
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty, or ESG, is a minimally invasive weight loss procedure performed using an endoscope. It reduces the size of the stomach with internal sutures, without external cuts or traditional surgery.
Is ESG a surgery?
ESG is not a traditional surgery. It is performed endoscopically through the mouth, meaning there are no external incisions. It is usually done under general anaesthesia by an experienced specialist.
How does ESG help with weight loss?
ESG reduces stomach volume, helping patients feel full earlier and for longer. This may help reduce food intake and support long-term weight loss when combined with lifestyle changes, nutritional guidance, and medical follow-up.
How much weight can I lose after ESG?
Weight loss varies between individuals. On average, patients may lose up to 17% of their total body weight within the first year after ESG, depending on their condition, lifestyle commitment, and follow-up care.
Who may be suitable for ESG?
ESG may be suitable for individuals struggling with obesity or excess weight who are looking for a non-surgical weight loss option. Suitability depends on body mass index, health condition, medical history, and specialist assessment.
