Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy, or PRRT, is a targeted molecular therapy in Malaysia for selected patients with neuroendocrine tumours. Also known as radioisotope therapy, PRRT uses a radioactive compound designed to target specific receptors on neuroendocrine tumour cells, helping deliver treatment directly to the tumour while reducing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues.
Available at Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, PRRT may be considered for patients with advanced or progressive neuroendocrine tumours, including carcinoid tumours, pheochromocytoma, and paraganglioma. Neuroendocrine tumours can arise from cells of the endocrine and nervous systems and are commonly found in the intestine, pancreas, lung, and other parts of the body.
Why Consider PRRT?
Neuroendocrine tumours can be complex and may require specialised treatment planning. PRRT offers a targeted treatment approach for selected patients whose tumours express suitable receptors for therapy. By delivering radioactive treatment directly to tumour cells, PRRT may help slow disease progression, support tumour control, and improve quality of life in suitable patients.
PRRT may be considered when neuroendocrine tumours are advanced, progressive, or not suitable for certain other treatment approaches. The treatment is usually planned after a detailed specialist assessment, imaging review, and confirmation that the tumour characteristics are appropriate for PRRT.
Who May Benefit from PRRT?
You may consider discussing PRRT with a specialist if you:
- Have advanced or progressive neuroendocrine tumours
- Have carcinoid tumours
- Have pheochromocytoma or paraganglioma
- Have been advised that your tumour may be suitable for targeted radioisotope therapy
- Are looking for a non-surgical and non-chemotherapy treatment option
- Want to understand whether PRRT can support disease control and quality of life
- Need specialist nuclear medicine assessment in Malaysia
What Are the Benefits of PRRT?
Potential benefits of PRRT may include:
- Highly targeted treatment
- No surgery or chemotherapy
- Non-invasive treatment requiring only one needle cannulation
- May help improve quality of life and survival outcomes
- Generally tolerable side effects for suitable patients
What is Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy (PRRT)?
PRRT is a targeted molecular therapy, also known as radioisotope therapy, that uses a radioactive compound to target specific receptors on neuroendocrine tumour cells.
What conditions may PRRT be used for?
PRRT may be considered for selected patients with advanced or progressive neuroendocrine tumours, including carcinoid tumours, pheochromocytoma, and paraganglioma.
How does PRRT work?
PRRT delivers a radioactive compound to tumour cells that express specific receptors. This allows radiation to be delivered more directly to tumour cells while limiting exposure to surrounding healthy tissues.
Is PRRT chemotherapy?
No. PRRT is not chemotherapy. It is a targeted radioisotope therapy used for selected neuroendocrine tumours.
Is PRRT a surgical treatment?
No. PRRT is non-surgical and non-invasive. It generally requires intravenous administration through needle cannulation.
What is included in the PRRT package?
The package includes PRRT dotatate administration, post-PRRT therapy scan, and doctor’s reporting fees.
What is not included in the PRRT package?
The package excludes dosimetry calculation, additional drugs outside standard pre-medication, additional treatments, additional imaging tests, consultations, and blood tests.
Who decides whether I am suitable for PRRT?
Suitability is determined by specialists after reviewing your diagnosis, imaging results, tumour characteristics, blood test results, overall health, and previous treatment history.
