Infertility is generally defined as the inability to conceive naturally after 12 months of regular, unprotected intercourse — or after 6 months for couples where the woman is above 35, given how fertility naturally declines with age. It's a common and often misunderstood condition, and can stem from either partner or a combination of factors. Understanding the underlying cause is the first step toward the right treatment.

Male factors: hormonal imbalance, blocked sperm ducts, erectile or sexual problems, abnormal sperm production, undescended testicles, or the after-effects of certain surgeries or medical treatments

Female factors: age, ovulation problems such as PCOS or hormonal imbalance, damaged fallopian tubes, an abnormally shaped uterus, cervical problems, or lifestyle factors such as smoking, poor diet and being over or underweight

IUI is a less invasive form of assisted conception, where washed sperm is placed directly into the uterus during the woman's ovulation period. It's often recommended as a starting point for couples, particularly where intercourse is difficult due to injury, disability or a condition like premature ejaculation, where the male partner has HIV (since sperm washing reduces transmission risk), or where the cause of infertility is unexplained. IUI isn't suitable for everyone — conditions such as blocked fallopian tubes, severe endometriosis or severe male infertility usually call for a different treatment path.

IVF is a well-established procedure to assist conception, where matured eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory to create embryos. With ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), a single healthy sperm is selected and injected directly into the egg under microscopic guidance.

The process runs in five stages: ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval (a day procedure under general anaesthetic), fertilisation in the lab, and finally embryo transfer, which can be done fresh or from a previously frozen embryo. IVF is commonly considered for conditions such as fallopian tube damage, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, poor sperm production or function, or unexplained infertility.

Cryopreservation allows eggs and sperm to be frozen and preserved for future use, giving individuals and couples more flexibility in planning a family. It's a meaningful option for those regularly exposed to workplace chemicals that may affect fertility, those who wish to delay having children, those diagnosed with endometriosis, or those about to undergo cancer treatment or treatment for an autoimmune disease, both of which can affect future fertility.

Time-lapse technology allows embryos to be continuously monitored inside the incubator, without ever needing to be removed for assessment. A camera captures ongoing digital images and video as the embryo develops, giving embryologists a far more detailed picture of its growth pattern than a traditional, periodic check would allow. This non-invasive, undisturbed monitoring makes it possible to identify embryos at higher risk of chromosomal abnormalities and select the strongest candidate for transfer — an advantage that has been linked to improved implantation rates and a reduced risk of pregnancy loss.

Pre-Implantation Genetic Testing (PGT) screens embryos for genetic abnormalities before transfer, working alongside IVF to help identify the healthiest embryo and reduce the risk of miscarriage or multiple pregnancy. Our laboratory uses Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), the most advanced form of PGT technology available, offering more detailed chromosome screening, faster turnaround and greater accuracy than earlier methods.

Two main forms of PGT are available: PGT-A, which checks for the correct number of chromosomes and is especially recommended for women above 36 or those with a history of repeated miscarriage; and PGT-M, which screens for specific inherited gene mutations linked to conditions such as thalassaemia, cystic fibrosis and sickle cell disease, helping couples with a known genetic risk avoid passing it on to their child

A successful embryo transfer depends heavily on timing — specifically, whether the uterine lining (endometrium) is truly ready to receive the embryo. ERA is a genetic test that analyses a small endometrial tissue sample to determine the ideal window for transfer, classifying the result as pre-receptive (not yet ready), receptive (ideal timing) or post-receptive (past the optimal window). This allows the fertility team to plan the embryo transfer with far greater precision, rather than relying on a standard timeline alone.
