The Inherited Cardiac Risk Test is a genetic test in Malaysia designed to identify whether a person carries gene mutations linked to a higher risk of inherited cardiovascular diseases and heart conditions. These may include familial hypercholesterolemia, cardiomyopathies, and other inherited heart-related conditions.

This test is suitable for individuals with a personal or family history of cardiovascular disease, as well as those who want to better understand their inherited heart risks and take preventive steps. Genetic insights may help patients and families plan screening, lifestyle changes, early interventions, and long-term heart health management with greater confidence.

Available at Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, the Inherited Cardiac Risk Test includes pre-test and post-test genetic counselling by experienced genetic counsellors. The test is available by appointment and is suitable for individuals aged 18 and above

Why Consider the Inherited Cardiac Risk Test?

Some heart conditions can run in families due to inherited genetic changes. A person may carry a gene mutation that increases the risk of certain cardiovascular conditions, even before symptoms appear. Understanding inherited cardiac risk can help individuals and families make informed decisions about screening, prevention, and early intervention.

The Inherited Cardiac Risk Test provides genetic insights that may support more personalised heart health planning. For individuals with a family history of heart disease, sudden cardiac events, high cholesterol, or cardiomyopathy, genetic testing may help identify whether closer monitoring or family screening should be considered.

Who May Benefit from the Inherited Cardiac Risk Test?

You may consider this test if you:

  • Have a personal history of cardiovascular disease
  • Have a family history of heart disease or inherited heart conditions
  • Have relatives with cardiomyopathy or familial hypercholesterolemia
  • Have a family history of sudden cardiac events or unexplained early heart disease
  • Want to understand inherited heart risks and prevention steps
  • Want to support family planning and early intervention decisions
  • Prefer genetic counselling before and after testing

Why Genetic Counselling Matters

Genetic counselling is an important part of inherited cardiac risk testing. A genetic counsellor helps patients understand what the test can and cannot tell them, reviews personal and family history, and explains the possible implications of the results.

After testing, genetic counselling helps patients interpret the findings and discuss next steps with their healthcare team. This may include heart screening, lifestyle changes, preventive care, specialist referral, or family member testing where appropriate.
