Defying T-Cell Lymphoma: Rashmi’s Journey of Courage and Dreams
22/09/2026
During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, stories like Rashmi’s remind families that a cancer diagnosis does not have to stop a child from learning, growing, and pursuing their dreams.
T-cell acute lymphoblastic lymphoma (TLBL) is a rare type of blood cancer that can be difficult to recognise in its early stages. Its symptoms may look similar to common childhood illnesses, which is why persistent or unusual symptoms should not be ignored.
Understanding TLBL and the Importance of Early Intervention
According to Dr Yap Tsiao Yi, Consultant Paediatrician and Paediatric Haematologist & Oncologist at Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City, early diagnosis plays an important role in helping medical teams begin treatment as soon as possible.
Dr Yap also encourages parents to trust their instincts. If something about a child’s health does not feel right, especially when symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical advice early can make a meaningful difference.
Rashmi’s Battle and Academic Triumph
At 16 years old, Rashmi was focused on her secondary school studies, preparing for her IGCSE examinations, and planning for life after school. Like many teenagers, her days revolved around classes, revision, friendships, and future dreams.
That routine changed almost overnight when she developed unexpected pain along her lower right rib cage. A medical scan later revealed T-cell acute lymphoblastic lymphoma, turning her school schedule into a new routine of hospital visits, blood tests, chemotherapy, and treatment cycles.
Hearing the word cancer felt unreal. But even as treatment began, Rashmi made a quiet decision: her diagnosis would not define her.
While undergoing chemotherapy, she continued studying for her IGCSE examinations. To support her goals, her school arranged for her to sit for her exams inside the hospital, while Dr Yap adjusted her treatment schedule around her examination dates.
With the support of her parents, sister, nurses, teachers, and care team, Rashmi persevered. She not only continued her studies but also returned to school on graduation day, where she received two academic excellence awards and a gold leadership award.
“Cancer changed my appearance and many parts of my life, but it never changed who I was... Cancer changed my plans, but it never changed who I am. Because nothing gets the final say but me.”
— Rashmi
Hope, Healing, and Life Beyond Diagnosis
Rashmi’s journey is a powerful reminder that childhood cancer care is not only about medical treatment. It is also about supporting a child’s emotional strength, education, identity, and dreams.
With early diagnosis, proper medical care, family support, and compassion, children facing cancer can continue to grow, learn, and look forward to life beyond diagnosis.
For parents and caregivers, the message is simple: if your child has persistent symptoms, unexplained pain, or changes in health that do not feel normal, do not delay seeking medical advice. Early assessment can help ensure the right care begins as soon as possible.
